We have played many weddings over the years, and getting your guests to dance is our specialty! Here are some sure fire suggestions for getting your guests to dance.
1) Have a cocktail hour where drinks are served while background music is played (either live or cd). After about 1/2 hour to an hour, people are warmed up and more ready to dance.
2) DIM THE LIGHTS! This is so important! Many halls don't turn the lights down unless they are asked to do so, but many people are too intimidated to dance in the light. When the lights are dimmed, they feel more comfortable and are more likely to let loose.
3) Choose a band that does all styles of music. Even if you like only hip hop, remember that you will have people of all ages and tastes at your wedding. A band that can do all styles is your best bet for getting more people on the dance floor.
4) Just as important, get a band with a beat that makes you move when you listen to it!
5) Start with a few slower dances or line dances and progressively turn up the heat. People usually aren't ready to run out on the get crazy right off the bat (although it DOES happen sometimes!). Even if you don't like line dances, you should consider having a few for people who want to dance but don't have partners.
6) Throw in a few ringers. Work it out with a few of your dancing guests to get on the dance floor right away and break the ice.
