ORIGINAL POST: An outdoor setting for your wedding and/or reception can be a beautiful touch. Here are a few important factors to consider when choosing musicians for this type of event.
First, some ensembles have special needs when it comes to the set-up. String and woodwind instruments especially need protection from the sun, which can damage instruments. Speak to your musicians about their needs - in most cases placing them in a shaded location (think large tree, under a tent, in the shadow of a nearby building) will do the trick.
Harpists will need a very flat surface on which to place the instrument, so some sort of platform is necessary even if the ground is quite level. Also, if you have hired a pianist who will play on an electric keyboard, make sure a power supply is available to him or her.
Electricity will also be necessary if you wish to amplify your musicians, which can be quite helpful for larger ceremonies located outdoors. While brass players will be able to project well, other groups may need a boost. Check with your venue and the musicians for their recommendations on this point. This extra step is worthwhile if it means you and each of your guests (even those in the back row!) will truly be able to enjoy the music.
